Jason Connell:

Whoa, just curious. Welcome to Just curious media. This is that's a crime. I'm Jason Connell.

Sal Rodriguez:

And I'm Sal Rodriguez.

Jason Connell:

Alright, so we are back with another crime. I know you're excited. And interesting one this a very bizarre one.

Sal Rodriguez:

This may be one of our most bizarre, I think,

Jason Connell:

I think so. Because today we are breaking down the true crime story of the man kills fishing partner over fear of being eaten by Bigfoot in 2022. A lot going on there a lot to unpack sell a lot in that headline. But this is a true story. I verified it with several sources. And we are going to delve into it because there's some tie ins, there's some educating there's some things and there's a murderer. So there's all of that. But before we dive into all that, Sal, I have an announcement. Yes, I'll be leaving that note. I bid you adieu. No, I'm the just curious Media website, something very exciting for all of the shows. We now have transcripts, I know don't get too excited. It's but It's sexier than that. Just me. I like it. These are really cool, interactive transcripts that I took many hours to put everything together. But I used otter AI, just me AI did the heavy lifting. But I put it all on there. And so if you go to our website, each show, there's a transcript underneath, like, watch and you have the YouTube link that says transcripts, click the button that says otter.ai Each show has its own, you'll be taken to another page, which is really clean has the logo in every single show chronological order. You click it, you know, whatever, like episode one, episode 30 Doesn't matter. You click it and there's all of the text for that's a crime. And bonus with using otter AI. You can read along you can pull a quote out, you can say oh, they did say that, or this is interesting information, or they covered that crime. I was gonna tell my friend about that crime. Well, you could get that data, you know, all of the script is there. But it also if you hit the play button, if you hit the play button, click the play button. You'll hear our dialogue to match. That's really clever. I know you've seen it and enjoyed it. So maybe let the fans know that I'm not just full of it over here.

Sal Rodriguez:

No, but you know, the truth is I've only looked at some of the transcripts of Let's Talk Cobra Kai, I will now make it a point to look at some of the transcripts from that's a crime. Yeah. Yeah, because I really did enjoy it. To tell you the truth. I liked the idea of audio becoming text. And I liked the idea of text becoming audio. So when it goes one way or another. So I love the fact that our transcripts are out there. Making SEO search features and stuff like that That's exact optimizes everything I like the whole idea of maybe hearing impaired people can see it. Yeah, people can take the script and translate it into another language. There's all like limitless possibilities.

Jason Connell:

And that this was a long overdue thing for me. So it's not like I woke up one day and just did it one day, this did take a long time to kind of get it right. You got to upload. Yeah, there's so many steps to go through. And I was trying to think of the best way to facilitate this. You can hire a service, it may be 100 something bucks a pop for each episode, it's going to add up and it's like, well, I wanted to also make it interactive and fun. And then I this solution, like I tested it, tested it on a few things said, Yeah, this is it. And then he had to build these new web pages. So it was a lot because I knew the upside was great. Yeah, close captioning. People want to translate it, they want to read it hearing impaired when you watch us on Youtube Live or go back later and watch it just on our YouTube channel. There's a closed caption button. I don't even facilitate that. That's on YouTube. I love that it's there. So I think it's great. And it just puts us out there in more places. And really, it's like a blog, like we haven't that's a crime blog. And this is what we had to say about all these crimes. So please check it out. And enough about that. That's all the housekeeping I got. So let's dive into this bizarre crime.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, and just to be clear, Jason, I have fun thoughts of Bigfoot. So I hope there's nothing just disparaging about Bigfoot in this

Jason Connell:

Sasquatch. Bigfoot. Absolutely longtime believer as a kid. Not sure what I believe now, but I love the myth. The legend like when I was in Scotland one time and I did a long drive up into the highlands and right where Lochness was found. I've been right there. There's like these statues. It's like, just being there. And just the legend is alive. You feel it? I swear. I'm not getting in that water. It's like, I believe whatever. But it's just something about it very tangible and Bigfoot is just a legend that will outlive us all trust me. Sure. So Oh, back to the crowd. On July 9 2022 52 year old Jimmy Knight and 53 year old Larry Sanders were fishing noodling in the south Canadian River near Ada, Oklahoma, which is about 85 miles outside of Oklahoma City. So so right away my radar goes off when I see these, you know, this being advertised on a lot of the news articles about crimes. Oklahomans, okay right there. And I also had another key word there fishing noodling. Now we're getting getting that in just one second, but I, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this. One of the person's names is Larry Sanders. Now it's like the show. I'm such a fan of The Larry Sanders Show ran from 1992 to 1998. Garry Shandling rest in peace was Larry Sanders, he created it with another person co creator, Dennis Klein, whom I've got to know had many discussions with Dennis, and not just about this about other things, but I was always quite fond when we talked if we ever got into The Larry Sanders Show discussion, to sing my praises an amazing show. It holds up I don't know if you're a fan is or as much as I am.

Sal Rodriguez:

But I love Gary Shandling stand up from Ballard the main Comic Relief days. I loved Garry Shandling show, but I never saw The Larry Sanders.

Jason Connell:

It's incredible episode. That's a deep dive for another time, but I'll check it out.

Sal Rodriguez:

I will noodling sound Yes.

Jason Connell:

Is very, I'd say near and dear to my heart, but I've never doodled. No, no, no, but I've always known about it like, okay, it's an Oklahoma thing and I'm sure surrounding states serves in Arkansas do it but yeah,

Sal Rodriguez:

I just learned about it. I just learned it. So

Jason Connell:

you just learned about it. What's the practice of hand fishing? Yeah, additionally referring to luring and capturing catfish. So you capture a catfish because these guys not me, I'm not a Noodler. But they all go into murky water feeling around with their hands, no fishing pole, they're in the water. And they're going around and just putting their arms underneath things because catfish like to kind of burrow down low underneath things. And they'll put your hand in there and the cat fish will bite down on your arm know kind of swallow your swallow your arm and you'll come up with said cat fish. And the sad thing is sometimes they go down there searching for that cat fish and there might be a beaver down there that's going to land on your arm or there are my water moccasin down there. So it's a dangerous there are many times if you go at it alone and you're supposed to travel with someone to do this, you can get caught wedged in a tree or a rock. So and they sometimes they go on there's moving water like flowing because there's this a lot going on. And they get trapped and so it's not maybe

Sal Rodriguez:

like a smart cat fish like lure you in? Lower. Nice

Jason Connell:

job there. Thank you. So I learned about it. Well, I heard about it as a kid cat fish in a tourist in Oklahoma. But in 2001 there was an incredible documentary called okie noodling. And it's directed by Bradley Beasley who I got to meet years later in Los Angeles. He went on to do a lot of videos for the Flaming Lips because they're from Oklahoma City. And so this doc comes out and this is this quickly, I'll read the synopsis for the duck. For centuries, a unique breed of fisherman has been catching the monster catfish with their bare hands in the rivers and lakes of Oklahoma. True story. This is a great doc. He follows these guys are going for this big tournament and you can see what I'm talking about unfolding before your eyes. Then there was okie noodling to 2008 also by Beasley I played it at the Tulsa United Film Festival. Okay, shout out. And then there was an Okie noodling TV series in 2008. Not done by Beasley, but he was involved with a TV show called Mudcats. That was in 2012. Mudcats is another name for it, I think. So there you go. There's the history. It's rich in Oklahoma with noodling. And these guys are noodlers.

Sal Rodriguez:

We're hanging on Jason, if I could just add how I discovered glaze, perusing YouTube a few years ago, and noodling has gone viral has the extent Yeah, it has gone viral to the extent where you will see hot bikini babes noodling. In fact, there's one like famous, like, hot babe in a bikini noodling. And she has a bunch of videos up on YouTube, so yeah, noodling. You can see anybody and everybody noodling nowadays.

Jason Connell:

I'd venture to say, the two people on this crime aren't in the hot babe category, not not happy. Yeah, but, and listen, I'm not making fun On one of them is killed. But this is the context the backstory of the backdrop of this crime is colorful, to say the least. So back to our noodlers. According to a statement issued by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Sanders and Knighten had been noodling in the river on Saturday when A confrontation ensued, and Sanders reported striking and strangling Knighton. Now the arrest affidavit had the following.

Sal Rodriguez:

Larry Sanders claimed that while at the river, he discovered Jimmy Nitin intended to feed him to Sasquatch Bigfoot, Larry indicated Jimmy attempted to get away from him, so that the Sasquatch could eat Larry. Larry would not let Jimmy get away. Larry punched Jimmy and struck Jimmy with a stick. Larry and Jimmy fought for an extended period of time on the ground. Larry confirmed he killed Jimmy by choking him to death near the river. Wow. Brutal. That

Jason Connell:

is brutal and interesting the way it's written, but that's a whole other thing. Yeah. So what is going on here? Did Jimmy really threatened Larry with being eaten by Bigfoot? That's what we don't know. Unfortunately, it's two guys on a fishing noodling expedition. And there's no other eyewitness there's nothing else to confirm what they're talking about. This is Jimmy coming clean to the authorities.

Sal Rodriguez:

I've never heard such a defense as that. Yeah, yeah,

Jason Connell:

he was gonna feed me to Sasquatch as if Jimmy has some sort of connection to Sasquatch. Bigfoot. Yeah. Right. Like, okay, you can come out now. I've got Larry right where we want it. Yeah. You know, it's like he's on something strong. And you could say alcohol are even stronger. That's my first thought. Right.

Sal Rodriguez:

Jason, I've heard of similar, unfortunate tragedies, right. And oftentimes, some people cannot handle possibly psychedelics, psychedelics, or anything that really could be mind altering to half elucidate. Yeah,

Jason Connell:

exactly. Yeah, the hallucinating like, I've heard it too. And I one doesn't come to mind. But I know there's times it's like know that kitty cat told me to cross it. Like, you know, and then they believe it to be

Sal Rodriguez:

my my actual figure told me to kill my family. Yeah, yeah.

Jason Connell:

Well, Sanders churned himself into county authorities and then drew a map sharing details of where investigators could find nitens body nitens body was recovered the following day. So I mean, this did happen. It wasn't a bad dream or a trip, or maybe it was and it definitely left bloodshed. authorities suspect Sanders was intoxicated at the time of the killing, but didn't release a specific motive. Now we also don't know intoxicated on what an alcohol or we don't have no other information. Yeah, under questioning. However, Sanders allegedly rambled about Bigfoot. So what you just read was, he gets talking to the authorities, and this is his statement. And then there really is a map and it really leads into a body. So they're probably taking it at least somewhat factual. So then the County Sheriff John Christian stated the following.

Sal Rodriguez:

He appeared to be under the influence of something. His statement was that Mr. Knighten had summoned Bigfoot to come and kill him. That's why he had to kill Mr. Knight. And, you know, Jason, my first thought was, why would somebody have such a crazy reasoning? But then I realized this is a great reasoning, because if you kill somebody under these, under this context, you can always plead insanity quite easily. There's that if you just say he owed me money, and I killed him. Well, good luck, right?

Jason Connell:

I don't know, seeing the photo of him. And maybe that's the plan. It also could just be, you know, sees the world a little differently. Or he was under some heavy Lumination or hallucinogens are intoxicated.

Sal Rodriguez:

Also, we don't know their background. What are like How close were they?

Jason Connell:

They were friendly old friend. We're friends. It wasn't like I was noodling. And you're noodling. And you know, they were there together.

Sal Rodriguez:

That makes it even worse. Because you because this guy killed a friend, rather than I mean, killing a stranger is horrible enough, but killing your friend is worse. Can we all agree with that? It's like worse to kill your friend. Right? Isn't it? In some ways, in some ways, it depends on the friend. But yeah, I'm glad that Bigfoot is not actually a part of this. No, I'm glad he's not actually part of

Jason Connell:

this. Well, despite Sanders, a legend and bizarre confession of killing a fellow fishermen out of fear he'd be left alone in the wilderness to be eaten by Bigfoot. county authorities vowed a full investigation into nitens suspected murder and referring to the king Fashion Sheriff Christian added,

Sal Rodriguez:

it always makes it easier. You still have to prove all the elements of the crime. And that what the suspect is telling you is actually what happened.

Jason Connell:

Right? Because you can come clean and say all these things, but they still need to do an investigation.

Sal Rodriguez:

Sure. And especially when there's no witnesses, jeez,

Jason Connell:

yeah, check the bruises. If things add up, check the blood alcohol or do a autopsy on night and just they need to do their work. And I know that this is not that old. I mean, this is July 2022. I couldn't find anything else out about what was happening. But I did learn that Sanders was charged with first degree murder in nine's death. And that's, hey, at least it wasn't like, Well, no, there's no foul play here. Obviously. What's being lost and kind of the backstory of there's some humor in this crime, no doubt with the Big Foot factor. But Jimmy Knighton, you know, here's a guy that goes on a fishing trip with a friend quote unquote, routine.

Sal Rodriguez:

Who knows how many times they've done it before? And

Jason Connell:

I'm sure you know, you're out there you give your friends crap. And maybe if it even came up if this Bigfoot thing, and theory is true, you know, sometimes you push things with guys. And someone just like takes it literal. And then comes out you and your highlight what's going on and you're defending yourself and then you know, it goes dark. And that's where it's like, oh my god, you know, even with your friend, you can't be safe. It's I mean, it's really tragic if you just hone in on that aspect. I was like, This is unbelievable. I wish to God someone else had been there to reason with them. Sometimes. It's all you need. Hey, take a break. Calm down. It's okay. Someone's out of their mind. But they flipped a switch cell. And Larry flipped a switch. And we're never going to get Jimmy back. Larry's you know, hopefully behind bars for good. No more updates is as of lately. Yeah. We don't have a sentencing. Yeah, no sentencing. Nothing yet, but still. And thank goodness. Bigfoot was not involved.

Sal Rodriguez:

Yeah, I'm very happy that Bigfoot was not involved and rest in peace, Jimmy night and I think we don't know anything about this guy. Other than he was brutally murdered by a friend. Exactly. In a river. I mean,

Jason Connell:

we know he's Nublar. So we do know now that he's so

Sal Rodriguez:

yeah. By the way, how far did this occur from where you grew up?

Jason Connell:

So it's 85 miles from Oklahoma City. So a little further from me like over 100 miles or so made? I've been by here before but you know, you've been by there but never to they're never to the south Canadian River. But I've been through ADA before. Okay, a lot of these little towns and such. So yeah, 100 plus miles away. Well, when I look for Bigfoot, I usually go to Ada and I just kind of bounced.

Sal Rodriguez:

Sure, sure. The Bigfoot capital of the world. And this is unfortunately a taint noodling for me. Right. There's that I became a noodling fan because of the bikini babes noodling. Yeah,

Jason Connell:

I think. I think you'll get over it. You think so? I think it'd be right back in there. You'd be looking at videos tonight.

Sal Rodriguez:

I want to know what happens long term, though. You know, you and I have discussed this on previous episodes. It's like, it's one thing to get an arrest. It's one thing to confession. It's one thing to get a conviction. But then what happens? How long do they stay in prison? Do they get out of prison? When do they get out on parole? When will they be walking out among us? When will they be noodling next to us? Hello.

Jason Connell:

Well, hopefully never for me. But yeah, you're absolutely right. And I again, we say this a lot. And I have recently gone through our crimes to like circle back around on ones that we never, you know, have a late update on if there's a sentencing or verdict. And nothing new because I was going to maybe line up some updates. So this will be in the mix. We'll keep an eye put some Google alerts if there is something you know, we can even store it in an episode or do an episode about an update if it's substantial enough, but great question. And yes, rest in peace, Jimmy Knighten really terrible, but an interesting and bizarre crime to cover with some interesting tie ins to Oklahoma noodling and the noodle goes out there. And that covers the true crime story of the man kills fishing partner over fear of being eaten by Bigfoot in 2022.
